How to Download YouTube Videos and Shorts as MP4

By the YTClip Team · Published · 3 min read

Choose the output you actually need before downloading. A full video, a short excerpt and an audio file use different YTClip tools. This guide helps you pick the right one and save a supported YouTube video or Short as MP4.

Full video, short clip or audio?

  • Keep the entire video: use YouTube Downloader for a supported video within your plan’s duration and file-size limits.
  • Keep one explanation or highlight: use the clip editor and choose exact start and end times. You do not need a full download first.
  • Keep only the sound: open YouTube to MP3 and select the audio range you want.

For example, a six-minute tutorial may be worth keeping in full. If you only need the explanation from 1:20 to 1:50, a 30-second clip is easier to review and share. A two-hour source exceeds the full downloader’s limits; use the clip editor for a supported excerpt instead.

Download a supported YouTube video or Short

  1. Copy its video link. Use the individual YouTube video’s Share link or browser address. Regular watch links, youtu.be links and public Shorts links are accepted.
  2. Paste it into YouTube Downloader. Select Prepare download. Sign in to a free YTClip account when prompted; no card is required for Free.
  3. Wait for preparation. YTClip checks the source and prepares an MP4 within your plan’s limits. Source access and processing time vary.
  4. Select Download MP4. Save the file to your phone or computer within ten minutes, then open the local copy to check playback and audio.

Use videos you own or have permission to save. The downloader handles one finished public video at a time. It does not download playlists, members-only content, private videos, age-restricted content or an ongoing live stream.

Account, size and quality limits

Free includes two YouTube downloads per rolling 30 days, up to ten minutes and 100 MB each, at up to 720p when available. TikTok and Instagram each have their own two-download Free allowance.

Pro includes 30 full-video downloads shared across the three platforms per rolling 30 days, up to 30 minutes and 250 MB each, at up to 1080p when available. Enterprise raises that allowance to 100, with a 60-minute and 500 MB limit per download. The full downloader’s ceiling is 1080p on paid plans; HD/4K options in the clip editor are a separate feature.

These are ceilings, not promises that every source will provide that resolution. A lower-quality source or access restriction can limit what is available. Increasing an export’s dimensions does not recreate missing detail.

Keep the file, not the temporary link

Your prepared download is available for ten minutes and then deleted. Check your browser’s Downloads list; on a phone, also look in Files or Downloads. Keep a local copy before the link expires.

Failed preparation does not use your allowance. Successful preparation counts even if you never save the file. Full-video downloads use neither clip exports nor AI minutes. The clip editor has separate limits: Free includes three clip exports each month, while Pro includes 75 and additional editing tools. See current plan details.

When a download will not prepare

Confirm that you pasted a video link rather than a playlist or channel. Check the stated duration and file-size limits. If the platform is blocking access, wait before trying again. Signing in to YouTube in another tab does not give YTClip access to a private or restricted source.

If you own the recording, Pro’s private-upload option lets you work from an original file. If you only need a short excerpt, follow the timestamp clipping guide. Neither workflow guarantees access to an unavailable YouTube source.

Build an editing workflow you can reuse

Once you know which moments matter, use batch clipping and saved presets to make related excerpts. Add captions for speech, keep a square or vertical crop appropriate to your destination, and review the finished file before publishing.
